Erica jong's fear of flying5/11/2023 The most extreme manifestations can include panic attacks or vomiting at the mere sight or mention of an aircraft or air travel. Take-off, bad weather, and turbulence appear to be the most anxiety provoking aspects of flying. They will avoid flying if they can, and the fear, anxiety, and avoidance cause significant distress and impair their ability to function. People with fear of flying experience intense, persistent fear or anxiety when they consider flying, as well as during flying. The condition can be treated with exposure therapy, which works better when combined with cognitive behavioral therapy. Īcute anxiety caused by flying can be treated with anti-anxiety medication. It is also referred to as flying anxiety, flying phobia, flight phobia, aviophobia, aerophobia, or pteromerhanophobia (although aerophobia also means a fear of drafts or of fresh air). The summer book tove jansson summary5/11/2023 My choice was one of Jansson’s earliest forays into adult fiction, the in-its-own-right dreamlike and magical ( magical and dreamlike aren’t fair terms to use for Jansson, for she has those qualities in ways that make other writers see uncomfortably pedestrian – in fact, what she does probably should have resulted in the coinage of its own term – Janssonesque) work, The Summer Book. So after reading Wufink’s essay on the dreamlike, magical memoir Sculptor’s Daughter, I expanded my 2014 reading list yet again (I have got to do a post to share the added works I’ve been reading) to add one of Jansson’s works. I was vaguely familiar with the Moomin books (terrific stuff for children and adults smart enough to realize that kids like the best stuff), but I had no experience with – actually, knowledge of – her work for adults. Wuf wrote an intriguing piece about the Finnish writer Tove Jansson, she of “ Moomins” fame, who also had a significant career as a writer of works for adults. Once again my fellow “mad for reading” sort Wufnik got to me. The Summer Book by Tove Jansson (image courtesy Goodreads) Edwin abbott abbott flatland5/11/2023 One day, the Square meets an alien: a being claiming to be a three-dimensional sphere from Spaceland! While most Flatlanders would flatly reject such an outrageous idea, Mr Square In this well-ordered world lives the narrator, A Square, a professional gentleman and proud father of four pentagonal sons (for male children have a good chance of being born with one more side than their fathers). No-one in Flatland has any notion of a third dimension everything is "Infinitely-sided" circles form the highest cast consisting of priests, and straight lines the lowest, consisting of - who else? - women. In Flatland, the more sides you've got, the higher up the social scale you are. It still is one of the best introductions to a mathematical world of higher dimensions, and it's an amazingly imaginative social satire, too.įlatland is set in a flat land: the two-dimensional plane inhabited by straight lines, polygons and circles. Abbott wrote this beautiful tale over a hundred years ago under the pseudonym A Square. Flatland: a romance of many dimensions by Edwin Abbott Abbott Leonard cohen nick cave5/11/2023 From Her to Eternity is crammed with any number of doom-laden songs, with Cave the understandable center of attention, his commanding vocals turning the blues and rural music into theatrical exhibitionism unmatched since Jim Morrison stalked stages. The group took wing with a harrowing version of Leonard Cohen's "Avalanche," Cave's wracked, buried tones suiting the Canadian legend's words perfectly, and never looked back. To be sure, Mick Harvey joined him from the Party days, as ever playing a variety of instruments, while one-time Party guest Blixa Bargeld now became a permanent Cave partner, splitting his time between the Bad Seeds and Einsturzende Neubaten ever since. Launched his solo career in style with From Her to Eternity, an accomplished album mixing the frenzy and power of his Birthday Party days with a dank, moody atmosphere that showed he was not interested in simply continuing what the older group had done. Due to the Moon's low surface gravity people who remain longer than six months undergo "irreversible physiological changes," and can never again live comfortably under Earth gravity, making 'escape' back to Earth impractical. Most Loonies are discharged criminals, political exiles and their free-born descendants men outnumber women two to one so that polyandry and many forms of polygamy are the norm. In 2075, the Moon (Luna) is used as a penal colony by Earth's government, with three million inhabitants (called "Loonies") living in underground cities. Originally serialized monthly in Worlds of If (December 1965 – April 1966), the book was nominated for the Nebula Award in 1966 and received the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1967. Wanderlust by rebecca solnit5/10/2023 With profiles of some of the most significant walkers in history and fiction - from Wordsworth to Gary Snyder, from Rousseau to Argentina's Mother of the Plaza de Mayo, from Jane Austen's Elizabeth Bennet to Andre Breton's Nadja - Wanderlust offers a provocative and profound examination of the interplay between the body, the imagination, and the world around the walker. Arguing that walking as history means walking for pleasure and for political, aesthetic, and social meaning, Solnit homes in on the walkers whose everyday and extreme acts have shaped our culture, from the peripatetic philosophers of ancient Greece to the poets of the Romantic Age, from the perambulations of the Surrealists to the ascents of mountaineers. The scarlet letter book pages5/10/2023 But, in that early severity of the Puritan character, an inference of this kind could not so indubitably be drawn. It could have betokened nothing short of the anticipated execution of some rioted culprit, on whom the sentence of a legal tribunal had but confirmed the verdict of public sentiment. Amongst any other population, or at a later period in the history of New England, the grim rigidity that petrified the bearded physiognomies of these good people would have augured some awful business in hand. The grass–plot before the jail, in Prison Lane, on a certain summer morning, not less than two centuries ago, was occupied by a pretty large number of the inhabitants of Boston, all with their eyes intently fastened on the iron–clamped oaken door.
